When Netflix introduced the streaming service to the Canadian market last year, it took the media landscape by storm.
It instantly changed how Canadians consumed media, as Netflix was able to offer more options and content to Canadians than its predecessor.
But with the launch of Prime Video, Netflix is aiming to give Canadians the option to stream video on their computers, phones and TVs with the help of a third-party app, dubbed “Interactive Video.”
With the app, Canadians will be able to browse through the millions of available titles on Netflix, browse for specific shows and movies and select from dozens of genres, from family entertainment to comedy to sci-fi.
The app also offers users access to thousands of live TV shows, including popular shows like “The Big Bang Theory” and “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, as well as a large library of original shows.
While some of the more popular Netflix shows are still available on their original platforms, Prime Video is the app that will eventually become the standard for accessing Netflix content.
“We are thrilled to introduce the first truly global version of our video service to Canadians,” Netflix said in a release.
“It is the next step for Netflix to bring a truly global TV experience to Canadians.”
For now, Prime Videos will only be available in Canada, and the app will only work on Apple TV, Roku, Xbox One and Chromecast.
However, the app is expected to be made available to other platforms later in the year.
Prime Video is available to Prime members in Canada and the U.K. and will be available to all Netflix subscribers worldwide.
Netflix has also added several new content offerings, including a new “Interacting Entertainment Platform” for Prime members, which will allow Canadians to enjoy more entertainment options through the interactive entertainment ecosystem.
“Netflix is one of the most trusted brands in the world and we are proud to be a part of this global entertainment platform,” said Jeff Green, VP of Global Programming and Digital Media at Netflix.
“Netflix will continue to build on our global footprint and make Prime Video available in new countries, and we look forward to introducing the Interacting Entertainment platform to more members around the world.”
The Interacting Content Platform will be the Netflix equivalent of an app for those who love to interact with the world of content and are willing to explore new platforms to discover new shows and films.
The app will also offer subscribers access to a library of over 40,000 movies and TV shows.
“Our goal is to create a seamless platform for Canadians to discover, share and experience new content, which is why we’re excited to bring this new service to Netflix and our other partners,” said Tim Clark, Chief Content Officer of Netflix.
“When Canadians watch content, they’ll find that Netflix is the place to go for the latest and greatest in entertainment and entertainment news, plus movies, TV shows and other content they love to watch.”
